Here’s the thing: I’ve been putting this off for some time now. I’ve wanted to start a blog since about a year, but always found a reason to procrastinate whether it is time, resources or sheer sloth. Well… Without further ado, here we go…

First things first… What’s my angle? Well, IT is a fast moving field. It’s not often you find yourself outpaced by technical advancements. Even when you stick to a single platform or framework, the speed at which new stuff gets pushed out is staggering. As I’m sure any other developer trying to make his/her way in this field, I have my TODO list. Needless to say, the list is huge. However, at any time I choose to learn a new technology, there’s a plethora of online resources. One of the most prominent sources of information I find over the web is from blogs. I’ve always been a consumer of these. Whenever I have a question and whatever the topic, there is bound to be someone out there who posted about it. Some time ago I started feeling like a leech, never giving anything back which is one of the main reasons I decided to do this.

Let’s be frank here. I’m not just going through the trouble for the greater good. Having a blog (especially one related to your work discipline) is also a great way to get extra leverage when applying for new jobs, advertising yourself, trying to get a freelance project, or just plain old showing off :-). Additionally, I’m a mid-career software developer, so you see it’s a bit of a tight spot when a colleague wants to share blogs with me.

Furthermore, if after some time you find your blog is getting good ratings, you can go a step further and try to make some profit off of it. The options are endless, and your choices may range from using an advertising service like Google Adsense to mining Bitcoins – yes that’s a real term and not something out of a video game.

If you’re still hanging on, I apologize for the painstaking intro. I guess I got a bit overzealous about having a blog. So “Getting my feet wet?” you say. The term is an idiom which means “experiencing something for the first time.” I found this suiting due to the nature of the IT field where you’re constantly being exposed to new technologies.

My next blog post will be entitled “Establishing an Online Presence”. It will include an overview of the process with which I created this blog among other stuff. Hopefully someone will find it of value.
